Robert North Matthias Claudius versét a lehető legpontosabban szerette volna táncra fordítani, hiszen Franz Schubert is a költő sorait követte d-moll vonósnégyesében. A koreográfia szerkezetét a zenei struktúra határozta meg, a lépéseket ugyanúgy variálta, ahogy a zeneszerző a témáit – a lehető legpontosabban, tiszta tánccal kívánta a zenét láttatni, klasszikus alapokra épülő modern stílusban és érzékeny gondolatisággal. A Halál végig a színpadon van, része a csoport mindennapjainak – ahogy mindannyiunk életének -, majd kiválasztja a Lánykát, aki eleinte fél tőle, de fokozatosan vonzódni kezd hozzá. Az ártatlan teremtés felismerve sorsát már menekülne, de végül megadóan elfogadja azt.

Robert North wished to translate Matthias Claudius' poem into dance as accurately as possible, as Franz Schubert also followed the poet's lines in his String quartet in D minor. The musical structure determined the structure of the choreography, and the steps were varied in the same way as the composer varied the lyrical themes. The choreographer wanted to present the music as accurately as possible, with pure dance, in a modern style, based on classical foundations, and with sensitive thoughts. Death is all the way on stage and is part of the group’s daily life - as is part of the life of all of us - and then he chooses the girl who is afraid of him at first, but gradually she becomes attracted to him. Recognizing her destiny, the maiden would have fled, but she would finally accept it.

„Utólag vesszük csak észre, hogy az energia minden. Amikor a Sad Case-en dolgoztunk 1998-ban, Sol terhessége már előrehaladott állapotban volt, az érzelmek és a hormonok az egekben jártak. A nevetés, az őrület és az előttünk álló ismeretlen adta izgalom növelte hormonszint maga volt e mű köldökzsinórja” – emlékszik vissza a balett keletkezésére az angol Paul Lightfoot, aki a spanyol származású Sol Leónnal egyszerre jegyzi az előadás koreográfiáját, díszlet- és jelmeztervét. 2020-ig León művészeti tanácsadója, Lightfoot pedig művészeti vezetője volt a Holland Táncszínháznak (NDT), és közösen mintegy hatvan alkotást hoztak itt létre, köztük a Sad Case-t, melyre kétségkívül alkotásaik fő pilléreinek egyikeként tekinthetünk. A darabban a mexikói mambó zenére látható meglepő mozdulatok tükrözik a szatirikus és a komoly közötti feszültség folyamatos keresését. Az Opera régi álma és terve vált valóra azzal, hogy a 2021/22-es évadban a magyar közönség számára is láthatóvá tudta tenni ezt az ellenállhatatlan, modern táncdarabot.

“Now in hindsight we realise that energy is everything. When we created Sad Case in 1998, so far in to Sol’s pregnancy, the hormones were jumping and emotions were high. It is these hormones of laughter, madness and the trepidation of the unknown ahead that are the umbilical chord of this work,” says the British Paul Lightfoot, thinking back to the origin of the ballet. He and his partner, the Spanish Sol León share credit for the performance’s choreography and set and costume designs. Up until 2020, León worked as artistic consultant and Lightfoot as artistic director for the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT), where they were responsible for bringing about sixty creations, including Sad Case, which is undoubtedly one of the pillars of their work. In it, surprising movements set to Mexican mambo music reflect the ongoing search for the tension between the satirical and the serious. The Opera has long planned the staging of this irresistible modern piece for Hungarian audiences – and by way of it, the art of the world-famous Lightfoot.
